Hi guys -- no time for updates, but hope you're sticking with me on Twitter for E3 stuff. Secondly, keep your eyes on Gamasutra's E3 page to see the coverage my colleagues and I are on about.
Who do you think 'won' the press conference war (yes, you know how much I hate this question, but let's pretend)? I feel Sony did a better showing than Microsoft, but Nintendo whupped 'em both. How about you?
Nintendo, for sure. Just the huge drop of unannounced games and the seemingly universally positive response to the 3DS really knocked it out of the park.
Penny-Arcade, as they are wont to do, did a fine job summing things up. I hope Reggie printed it and put it on his wall today.
It feels good to see Nintendo come out swinging with a strong presence again. I haven't been that pleased with a presentation of theirs in a long time.
On the other hand, it's a little strange to view the company that financially has trounced their competition this generation as some sort of scrappy underdog needing a comeback, but from a PR perspective with gamers that's kind of how it feels for the Big N.
I want to get my hands on a 3DS to try it so very, very badly.
I feel the same way. Even putting my love of Nintendo games aside, they still did the best job of showing us games. Sony had kinda bad pacing, and Microsoft had to focus too much on showing us exactly what Kinect can do, while Nintendo was allowed to focus on games, games, and more games.
<3 Animal Crossing 3D, bleh on so many shooters (surprising, as it's one of my favorite genres).
Nintendo probably did the best out of the three, but Sony's was also pretty decent. Microsoft's, on the other hand, I felt was a little poor. The hardware and software coming with Kinect failed to convince me.
Nintendo came out ahead with a refreshingly gamer-centric showing. It's basically all rehashes of their core franchises, but isn't their ability to keep coming back to those franchises those franchises without running them into the ground what we love them for at this point? They're the gaming equivalent of comfort food. It's not just meatloaf and mashed potatoes, it's the meatloaf and mashed potatoes the way your mom made it when you were a kid. You've had it a million times and there are precisely zero surprises, but when that nostalgia hits you it doesn't matter.
Sony had a healthy second. Kevin Butler's speech was great. The Portal 2 thing was a coup, I'd call it this year's Final Fantasy 13. Of course Twisted Metal (speaking of revisiting your franchises). The Move stuff was kind of whatever. Sorcery looked kind of neat. Not anywhere near the same league as 3DS Kid Icarus, but head and shoulders above anything MS showed for Kinect besides Child of Eden (which is coming to Move anyway). Last Guardian details was the only thing I missed, but there's just not much anybody can do when the 800-lb gorilla that is Nintendo decides to throw its weight around.
I don't even want to talk about Microsoft's show. If Kinect could ACTUALLY make me a cup of earl grey, I'd consider giving it the time of day. The gamer-targeted stuff was all over-exposed Halo/Gears hyper-macho "hardcore" stuff. Read: the stuff I care about the least, which we've already seen the most about. Rising looked entertaining, but it's multiplatform so Konami gets the point for that, not MS. I had reasonably high expectations, but when I look back at what they showed and the two games I got excited about are Child of Eden and MGS: Rising it's hard not to feel like they dropped the ball.
I'm going to have to go ahead and agree with you. Nintendo absolutely came out swinging this year. I still thought Sony's was really good though. I'll also say that Microsoft's was at least better than last year where they marched out a bunch of celebrities to cover the fact that they didn't have much to show. Yeah, much better from them this year. Overall a really great E3 this year, with Nintendo finally on top.

I liked the stream. It was, dare I say, FUN! Get a sense of humor, people! Get some friends! Have some drinks with said friends and see how much loud, obnoxious and raucous joy it can be. You got your E3 news all week long. If you need more hit up Destructoid, Kotaku, Gametrailers, Shacknews, etc.
I'll tell you what won E3. The one brief moment that they showed Persona 3 Portable in the Sony Conference. It's one of the few games coming out I'm legitimately excited about, even having completed P3 numerous times.
I'm not even going to state my own, or what appears to be the majority's, opinion. I'll just say that Jeff, Brad, and Vinny left the room and started streaming a separate podcast because of you. I've also heard that Ryan's not even going to publish the podcast. People seem to enjoy your blogging, but I don't think podcasting is your thing.
It's not an issue about the GB community hating opinionated women. We love Carrie Gouskos. You're just an annoying asshat. It has nothing to do with your gender.

Thanks for the entertainment and try not to hold it against Jeff and Ryan for setting you up like this and not telling you about the all the hate from the comments and Ustream chat while you were thanking the GB community for their 'support'. XD
A lot of people on the comments are either internet white knights or haters.
So let's look at the facts instead.
1) There were important people from the game industry there, including people that are starting to go indie and people that are working on AAA titles for the big companies.
2) This thing happens only ONCE a year which obviously coincides with one of the most important events in the industry.
3) Instead of finding cool insights on various aspects of the industry and finding inspiration, people got the hear the loud drunk lady that was talking over EVERYONE at EVERYTIME just to say "Fuck Boston" every 10 seconds.
4) The number of users that were as displeased with her performance outnumbers the people that enjoyed it by a LOT. Even on her own blog.
She pretty much ruined something that could've been really amazing. Making an fool of herself on the process. Not to mention that she was throwing herself at Brad constatly which was probably the most embarassing part of the whole thing.
I haven't heard the Bombcast, so I'll reserve judgment. I will say that Leigh is an excellent videogame journalist based on her writings here and at Gamasutra, Kotaku, Onion AV, and elsewhere.
All of these anonymous users that have suddenly appeared because they are upset-- don't think you've got her figured out based on one drunken night. Leigh is generally very good at what she does.
In terms of what the industry and gamers as a whole want, Nintendo definitely took the show. All the begged-for updates to beloved franchises are getting made (the new Kirby - wow), and folks are prepared to forgive all past transgressions - plus they're showing off the sweetest new tech with their glasses-less 3D.
Personally, Sony showed the most games I'm actually interested in. I liked that they presented some reasonably evidence for the Move being used for core gamer pursuits.

It's definitely not Leigh in top form, but it's getting way blown out of proportion. Was she loud? yes. Did she interrupt too much and talk over others? yes. As I look through these comments, it amazes me that there is so much sexism coming from the Giant Bomb community. Across multiple posts we see words like bitch, cunt, whore, and twat. We hear complaints about her voice being high pitched. Complaints about her speaking out of turn. Complaints about her using unlady-like curse words. Complaints about her drinking. One poster even bothered to pre-emptively state that it's not about her being a woman while in the same posting calling her a whore (a sexist term, even if you are a woman).
When I listen to the podcast, I hear a girl slumming it up with the guys. And I think the fact that Leigh is a woman is what is triggering many of you to complain about her behavior. If you listen back, you will also hear the guys talk loud, swear, drink, speak out of turn, etc. These are just the things that a gender-typical female is not supposed to do and I think the fact that many of the reactions against her are laden with sexist terms indicates that many of you are just upset to see a lady in the boys club who's trying to have some fun with the guys. That's not to say that there is no validity to what some of you are complaining about (she did talk over people a lot, for example); however, she didn't do anything egregiously out of step with the tone of the overall show. There is clearly a strain of sexism in the comments that is upsetting and frankly, just disappointing to hear.
I understand that, JT, but you've gotta think geographically too. Boston's a very sports-oriented place, and much of the state follows suit. Gamers included. That was a rough game to watch, and then Leigh interrupted actual questions with "Fuck Boston."

A criticism of your conduct does not, simply by existing, have to have anything to do with gender.

I'll tell you what won E3. The one brief moment that they showed Persona 3 Portable in the Sony Conference. It's one of the few games coming out I'm legitimately excited about, even having completed P3 numerous times.

A lot of people on the comments are either internet white knights or haters.
So let's look at the facts instead.
1) There were important people from the game industry there, including people that are starting to go indie and people that are working on AAA titles for the big companies.
2) This thing happens only ONCE a year which obviously coincides with one of the most important events in the industry.
3) Instead of finding cool insights on various aspects of the industry and finding inspiration, people got the hear the loud drunk lady that was talking over EVERYONE at EVERYTIME just to say "Fuck Boston" every 10 seconds.
4) The number of users that were as displeased with her performance outnumbers the people that enjoyed it by a LOT. Even on her own blog.
She pretty much ruined something that could've been really amazing. Making an fool of herself on the process. Not to mention that she was throwing herself at Brad constatly which was probably the most embarassing part of the whole thing.
I haven't heard the Bombcast, so I'll reserve judgment. I will say that Leigh is an excellent videogame journalist based on her writings here and at Gamasutra, Kotaku, Onion AV, and elsewhere.
All of these anonymous users that have suddenly appeared because they are upset-- don't think you've got her figured out based on one drunken night. Leigh is generally very good at what she does.

In terms of what the industry and gamers as a whole want, Nintendo definitely took the show. All the begged-for updates to beloved franchises are getting made (the new Kirby - wow), and folks are prepared to forgive all past transgressions - plus they're showing off the sweetest new tech with their glasses-less 3D.
Personally, Sony showed the most games I'm actually interested in. I liked that they presented some reasonably evidence for the Move being used for core gamer pursuits.
I didn't know Hatchet-Face from Cry-Baby was in games press.

As I look through these comments, it amazes me that there is so much sexism coming from the Giant Bomb community. Across multiple posts we see words like bitch, cunt, whore, and twat. We hear complaints about her voice being high pitched. Complaints about her speaking out of turn. Complaints about her using unlady-like curse words. Complaints about her drinking. One poster even bothered to pre-emptively state that it's not about her being a woman while in the same posting calling her a whore (a sexist term, even if you are a woman).
When I listen to the podcast, I hear a girl slumming it up with the guys. And I think the fact that Leigh is a woman is what is triggering many of you to complain about her behavior. If you listen back, you will also hear the guys talk loud, swear, drink, speak out of turn, etc. These are just the things that a gender-typical female is not supposed to do and I think the fact that many of the reactions against her are laden with sexist terms indicates that many of you are just upset to see a lady in the boys club who's trying to have some fun with the guys. That's not to say that there is no validity to what some of you are complaining about (she did talk over people a lot, for example); however, she didn't do anything egregiously out of step with the tone of the overall show. There is clearly a strain of sexism in the comments that is upsetting and frankly, just disappointing to hear.
I understand that, JT, but you've gotta think geographically too. Boston's a very sports-oriented place, and much of the state follows suit. Gamers included. That was a rough game to watch, and then Leigh interrupted actual questions with "Fuck Boston."

I haven't listened yet, but if they actually had to tell you they were going to cut your mic if you didn't stop talking over them... then no, that's not something that "everyone else" does on their show - in fact, that's never happened so far as I'm aware.
I enjoyed the last episode you were on with them, but you definitely came off as somebody who needed to get a word in on everything, whether there was something to be said on the subject or not, and that isn't the way any of them usually behave. A criticism of your conduct does not, simply by existing, have to have anything to do with gender.
That said, until I've listened to it for myself, which I'll do later this week, obviously I don't know how valid any of the criticisms are or aren't. But this is a pretty crazy backlash if you were just "having a good time on a podcast."
