Meanwhile, I just got Little King's Story and I can't wait to start playing; been looking forward to it since I had it previewed for me last year. So cute -- and be sure and check out Gamasutra's feature today interviewing the game's creator, Yoshio Kimura. Fascinating! One of those auteur types we all love to love. Feature's worth reading for his strange/adorable/amazing drawings alone.
What are you guys playing this weekend? Is it just me, or is now a real good time largely to revisit old favorites (like the complete King's Quest collection now out on Steam for just $15, omg omg) rather than look for new releases?
King me!

I'll be playing the lines at Comic-Con. There are way too many people at that event... kick out all the tourists and let us San Diegans play around!
Also... I'll be playing Drum-n-Bass on my headphones (you really should listen to more EDM, your twitter feed makes me sad) and I'm playing Prototype and Age of Conan on the downtime.
Just picked up Onechanbara for xbox yesterday and will do my best to play that till I can tolerate it anymore :P That and Splosion Man
i only listen to good EDM, of which like three qualify as music
(hint -- criticizing my taste is off limits on svgl :D)
Had an urge for nostalgic gaming the other weekend, and ended up plugging Earthbound into my SNES again. That game sucks me in EVERY time.
That, and committing myself to finishing Fallout 3. Finally.
Finally playing The Conduit. Did you ever get to it, or are your Wiimotes still dead? I'll also be playing Battlefield 1943 and "Run a 7 mile race." lol Fun times!
Man, it took me like three reads to see that you said "King's Quest" and not "King's Bounty," which is also $15 on Steam right now. I guess I'm officially hooked, eh?
Right now it seems like some good oldies and recent releases are just getting amazing price drops. I've started playing Sins of a Solar Empire recently, and I'm seriously losing time to that game. I imagine I'll get home from work this afternoon, start up a game and come to at 4 AM on Monday, surrounded by empty cans of Spaghettios, wearing a stained wife-beater tank top and some sweet five o'clock shadow. The only challenge to Sins' hold comes from Dawn of War II and its recent restructuring. That game is a whole new kind of beautiful mess.
The remastered Monkey Island might help too. That game was such a huge part of my formative gaming years. With all the old school releases dropping on Steam and the digital distributors taking advantage of the summer drought with price drops, it's a very good time to be a PC gamer.
At a LAN party with some friends this weekend, who have mostly poor computers. Will mostly be playing Aliens vs Predator 2, various Half-Life 1 & 2 mods and maybe Stalker etc.
I find that I have been ignoring new releases for quite some time in favor of older games I can simply pick up and play. I have a very busy schedule, so I can't really set aside the time to get into newer titles as much as I'd like. That being said, I am currently playing the hell out of Raiden Fighters Aces. There's just something about old-school shoot 'em ups that I really get into, and I think it boils down to these factors: easy to pick up and play, lasting challenge, and that "zen" feeling you get when you are having a really good run.
Street Fighter IV is what I'll be playing. Possibly some old SNES games
I'm kind of stuck grinding for a boss in FFXII Revenant Wings for the DS, but it was pretty fun up to that point! Other'n that, I'm playing my boyfriend's copy of Link to the Past on his old SNES for the first time. The controller feels so tiny in my hands after months with the 360!
I've also been looking forward to Little King's Quest. I'll probably pick that up this weekend. I'm just getting into the meat of Knights in the Nightmare on DS, so I'll be playing some of that as well. And of course, Demon's Souls, which is now officially my favorite PS3 game.
Ugh! Little King's Story, I meant.
Heaven help me, I've gotten back into World of Warcraft. In my defense, it's mostly because it's the only way I can spend time with some of my far-scattered friends, and running dungeons and raids with them at high levels is a lot like playing team sports with them.
Other than that, I've been enjoying Blood Bowl for the heady memories it brings back of youth pleasantly wasted at the local gaming store. And I just picked up Guitar Hero Smash Hits, because I have a burning need to get back to playing fake drums, and figured I should take a gander at how they handled them - preferably while drinking copiously and flailing madly at Barracuda.
Fred, are you tepid about your WoW time due to social pressure to feel that way, or because you really don't feel you're getting a reward proportionate to the timesink? it sounds like valuable playtime, team sports with friends!
On the other hand, when I throw another ten hours into the Peggle chasm, I feel cheap, resentful and like I was tricked somehow. i know some people feel that way about WoW too.
I'll be playing Dragon Quest V on the DS, so as to finally take it off of my GAMES I SHOULD HAVE PLAYED YEARS AGO list. It seemed like a good time, given that the entire country of Japan is currently going completely bananas for DQ 9...might as well play catch-up in solidarity, hehe.
Oh and I was recently reading Tim Rogers's review of the game, that too. If you haven't read it or played DQV, the review is guaranteed to shame you into buying it immediately. It is a classic Rogers tour de force: passionate, thought-provoking, and of course full wildly extravagant statements. (E.g.: "The wisdom of Yuji Horii is as infinite as the winding roads of Tokyo, as deep and simultaneously as simple as the abundance of shops in one of the lower-middle-class Tokyo department stores on which he bases his game-design philosophy.") http://www.actionbutton.net/?p=391
I finally got Little King's Story yesterday, and the missus is away this weekend :-)
So far, I love it. One thing I will say, that I haven't heard anyone mention or read in reviews is that the score is brilliant! It's like Fantastia :-)
Really looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this one. Easily my favourite game of the year so far.
1. Wii Sports Resort [shill alert]
2. Still hacking slowly away at Empire: Total War.
3. Beyond Good and Evil
4. Trying not to buy things on the crazy weekend sale that seems to be becoming more and more common - http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/59702
4. Speaking of weekend deals, maybe I'll get around to that huge 2K pack I bought awhile ago. Maybe finally get around to Bioshock?
5. Gotta stay away from Civ4 or Sim City 4.
I've been enjoying Steam a lot in recent months. After years of being a console-only gamer, Steam has finally brought me back to the PC for the first time since Doom! I never thought that would happen, but I'm loving it.
And what is it about Peggle? It hurts my eyes to look at the rainbows and unicorns, but it's like the Lay's potato chip of videogames-- no one can play just one level. Maybe videogame-junk-food is a new genre?
Oh, and my Steam ID is Jungle_Toad if anyone wants to add a fellow sexyvideogameland regular to their friends list. :)
I'm playing the hell out of some Shatter. Jumping back and forth between Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories and the Watchmen games and Killzone 2 and Dead Space
Little King's Story + King's Quest series + Space Quest series = fallout shelter-levels of longevity
Glad to hear from you, Leigh. I'm playing Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. Best PSP game of all time. :)
That, and Dwarf Fortress on the PC, which will never let me go, it seems.
Have fun with Little King's Story.
I rented Silent Hill Homecoming from Blockbusters. Big fucking mistake.
In what is surely the most idiotic oversight of the last decade, Jason Allen – lead designer – omitted the option to invert the camera aim. What the fuck?
Those of us who find the typical default camera unworkable - and we represent a substantial portion of the gaming population – simply cannot see this game through to its conclusion. The impractical controls prove an insurmountable obstacle to our enjoyment of the game. It’s like trying to undo a bra with no fingers – fucking frustrating.
It’s a shame because the bleak and oppressive atmosphere that Silent Hill has perfected is rendered utterly redundant. The only horrifying thing about this game is Jason Allen’s fatal lapse in judgement.
What a tit.
@Digital Gigolo: You really can't invert the camera? Why would they not include that option? As someone who plays inverted, let me add to the chorus of 'what the fuck'. I only recently played SH2 and was looking at Homecoming, but if that is indeed true, then I'm not going to bother.
I just finished Tales of Vesperia (loved it) and have been going back through my collection. I just started a new Mass Effect game, as I wasn't aware you could do a New Game+ with your save file.
I'm revisiting LoZ: Majora's Mask. I still love the creepy feel of that game, even if it is a bit short.
@Michael: I'm glad you share my sentiments sir. 'Tis a truly absurd omission is in not?
Click on my name and check out other people's similar reactions to this ridiculous charade.
I've been playing SMT: Devil Survivor. And loving it.

Good choice mate! My favourite as well.
I'm going back to a few old games because as someone stated on a website I regularly visit, this year has been rather empty and disappointing.
Games are Assassins Creed, Oblivion, the rather boring Far Cry 2, Mirror's Edge and I'm just modelling some 3D props for a few friends.
Trying to find a bit of Nostalgia in Link's Awakening and an obscure piece of my childhood (sorta), Magi Nation. Odd to pull out the Gameboy Color again.
And since friends are in town, FF Crystal Chronicles may be necessary, if we can find the GBAs again...
@Digital Gigolo: I seem to recall that Shamus Young also went off on quite a rant about Homecoming not having an inverted camera. Not that I really had any interest in playing it anyway; after the fairly awesome Silent Hill 2, it seems to me that the series has just kept going downhill.
I'm planning to get Little King's Story and 'Splosion Man sometime next week. Right now, I'm mostly playing Call of Duty 4 multiplayer, interspersed with bits of Final Fantasy 6 (my first time playing it, ever!) and TGP.
Good God when we talked about King Quest on Twitter I didn't realize they were all available on Steam for that price.
Those guys just got even more of my money.
Damn it!
I had the very random urge to pull out and play Advance Wars: Dual Strike (the best in the series, in my opinion) while I went to the laundromat yesterday. Now I can't stop :-)
