Not Even Funny

How busy I am. I'll let you all know on what in a little while.

Meanwhile, this is funny -- did you guys know you all read my blog because I am a LADY?

Update: Please be nice to the Hardcasual guys. They are pals. The blog post I linked above is meant as satire. It is not real.

Oh no! We've been found out! Everyone, SCATTER!

I can't say it isn't slightly true. I am not trying to start a flame war but I already read so many blogs by guys it is a welcome change of perspective and voice to hear from a girl...especially about a seemingly male dominated area. You, as a woman, give a unique view of the business.

@ Leigh

Umm you mean you didn't know... :P

To be perfectly honest though, the fact you're a woman attrated me to your site in the first place, the fact you're so good at what you do keeps me coming back for more.

ps: Sorry but our wedding is off...I met someone. We can still be friends though. :)

It's true, it's true.

But don't worry, I'd NEVER be able to talk to you (or any girl) in real life.

indigostatic said...

No no no, it's not because you are a girl Leigh, it's because your blog's title has the word "sexy" on it, and everyone wants to read a sexy blog.

Now, seriously, it is somewhat of a welcome change of perspective like Lindstor mentioned... which is kind of sad.

SVGL said...

It's not sad. Boys and girls is different, d'ja know, and I don't think there's anything wrong with the concept that women have differently-communicated perspectives than men.

Wolf_Dog but how will I ever move on? :)

I just randomly followed a link off of Jeff Gerstmann's blog back before Giantbomb existed. I thought it would be about sexy video games. ;)

Speaking of Giantbomb, I'd love to hear what you think about the Persona 4 Endurance Run sometime.

Linky if you haven't seen any of it

Hardcasual is great :)
I love it when they parody crazy people.

Pepe said...

Yeah, I knew it.

The "sexy" in the title also helps.

I do have a special interest on reading or watching what ladies write or make. Since I'm quite intrigued on how different men and women really are.

It also helps that I really like your writing but... yeah, the reason I got hooked with your blog was because you Are a chick.

Hope you can forgive me someday.

Dario said...

Of course I knew, duh!

Pepe said...

After reading Chuck Johnson's statements it also occurred to me that you get more replies because we see girls as more open and less intimidating. That allows to the likes of me (shy introverted boys ^_^) to talk more freely.

I think...

Yes, no one reads my blog too because im not a chick....
and maybe because i have no blog....

Asperger's Anime Blogger said...

Wasn't I the guy who alerted you to this Hardcasual post?

Anyway, as I see it, nobody wants to read my webmanga "Ask Junko!" which is in the works because it involves a female character in discussion with the male creator about various issues, however once the "Full Metal Feminist" story arc starts it should get interesting.

Some people read my blog because it's one thing to read a guy's blog, but it's quite another to read a guy with Asperger's blog which talks about anime and other related media through that lense. In the tide of manliness on the internet it is possible for male minorities to exist, albeit harder to recognise as minorities in themselves.

Darkness U.S.A said...

you mean there are other video game blogs not written by women?

honestly this was the first blog I came upon that talked about video games from somewhat of a insider/outsider point of view.and your love for metal gear solid

I started reading this blog because the guys over at RockPaperShotgun kept singing your praises in their Sunday Papers series and found that, wow, there are some brilliant articles here. And because of Sexy Videogameland I started paying close attention to Gamasutra.

On topic: maybe, maybe. Largely I think it's about having a pleasant face to associate a name with and, let's face it, the majority of male games journos do not have the most pleasant of faces.

I found my way here through Garnett's mentioning of your blog on 1upYours last year. The name lodged in my head and stuck. I'm too hateful towards everyone visit a woman's blog BECAUSE they're are a woman...

beylita said...

It was because of you being a woman that your articles on GSW seemed slightly less creepy than they could have been. Note that I went to GSW in the first place for TOLLMASTER's Roboto-chan articles.

Malcolm Ryan said...

Hey, call me shallow but you're an attractive intelligent woman who talks about sex and videogames. Did that influence my decision to read your blog? Absolutely.

Would I keep reading if you didn't consistently have interesting and insightful things to say? Absolutely not.

(Have I picked up Kevin Rudd's* annoying habit of talking it questions? It seems that I have.)

* Is Kevin Rudd the Australian Prime Minister? Yes he is.

You could be an asexual Turing-compliant android and we'd never know.

I know I'd never care about that as long as your opinions were valid.

Ben Villarreal said...

I won't lie; your gender did attract me to this blog (we don't get a female perspective very often, and having a new perspective, any perspective, might have more to do with it than you being a woman).

But what kept me coming back was the tidbits about your career (which sounds like one of my dream jobs) and reading into your work for the secrets to success in that career.

Ironically, this post perhaps demonstrates most effectively that the number one secret is having a fresh perspective.

thanks for the backup, leigh, with the update

... although the hateful comments make me happier than the helpful comments.

Girls, ON THE INTERNET! The madness.

But yeah, it's nice to have a girl's perspective on a mostly male business. Like a girl covering the sports news on tv and actually knowing what she talks about.

HEY, GURL, I'M ONLY READING CAUSE MY BANNER'S STILL UP THERE

Haha, that's not what I meant =)
It's kind of sad that the female view is not common in our industry. It's something we rarely see, even here in the blogosphere.
Though, I wonder if it will ever be common.

That's partly true. There aren't that many gaming blogs by ladies out there. Interesting to hear from the other side of the fence for once.

Amanda Cosmos said...

It's a trap! You posted a link, just as was most likely intended by such a remark!

Well, since we're sharing stories of how we found this site, I first found this blog linked from one of your Harvest Moon articles on GameSetWatch.

SVGL said...

I was not expecting the stories of how you guys all found SVGL. Amazing -- thank you so much.

Scypher -- YES YES i want like an onechanbara one <3333

Boy are Michael Abbott, Iriquois Pliskin, Duncan Fyfe, Mitch Krpata, etc. going to be surprised to find out they're actually ladies.

To be honest, I did start reading this blog because it was written by a woman gamer. I was interested to see if it would be different than most game critiques. Luckily for me, it it. I'm a guy who doesn't really like reading the average guy-written game news. But then again, I'm not your average guy anyway.

Yayo said...

I knew and and it's completely true.

And I agree with Toby Jones postulations ^g^

brgulker said...

To be honest, I started reading your blog -- like many apparently -- because of the unique perspective that you bring to gaming.

Wolf_Dog said it well:

"To be perfectly honest though, the fact you're a woman attracted me to your site in the first place, the fact you're so good at what you do keeps me coming back for more."

I started reading your blog because I wanted a different perspective.

I keep it in my feed reader because you are an excellent writer.

Sorry, what were you saying? I was too busy looking at your lovely eyes!

Actually, I started reading your work on Aberrant Gamer, where I did not realise you were a girl at all. Due to the subject matter I assumed you were a guy, albeit a very witty and perceptive one.

Then I followed the link to your blog and made the awesome discovery that you were in fact of the female persuasion. It was love at first sight ... your articles were superb.

:p

I came here because this blog shut down.

i've read your stuff way before i figured out you were a girl.

i think what freaks me out more is the birthdate thing.

SVGL said...

Why is my birthdate freaky? I am old, huh. :(

OK, so I'm like two months too late on this, but the whole thing is too freaking hilarious to pass without comment.

Several factors here:

1. Let's not kid ourselves here: you're continually exploiting your face by posting photos of yourself. There's nothing wrong with this. Work what you've got.

2. That's not gender-specific. I really enjoy looking at good-looking men. I prefer it to looking at not-good-looking men.

3. The impact of that on whether I'm going to read someone's rantings = zero. So I think N'Gai looks better than Sessler. So what? Sessler talks sense.

Maybe the other guy's bitter because he's talking illiterate bollocks.
