"Citizen Killzone"

Many of you liked the brow-raising, "oh, Internet" complaint by PSXExtreme regarding Edge's Killzone 2 review. You may or may not know my Gamasutra colleague Chris Remo is one of the folks behind the popular Idle Thumbs podcast, and as the crew often does, they've come up with another hilarious song about the Issues Burning Up The Internet Today. Check out "Citizen Killzone," will you?

The lyrics are up on Simon Carless' GameSetWatch -- bonus!

Unfortunate folks who hate podcasts but love songs can download the tune as a standalone MP3 here.

Gaming's missing Kane is missing no more?

Heh. Crazy internets, when will they learn that other people are free to have opinions too?

More complex than that, I know, but drawing battle lines over a piece of electronics is quite silly.

Well Leigh, we finally have our Citizen Kane of gaming it seems. I guess the journey is over.

But honestly, there's no problem in disagreeing with a review but do it smartly and not.... like that. Silly fanboys.

Well, I only bought Edge once, and I felt ripped-off. Maybe it's because the Spanish edition was just a translation of the English edition. I can sympathize about what they say about Edge trying to lie in order to get some "elite cred"; maybe because that's the "foaming-at-the-mouth" tone I would write in if a magazine said some retarded bullshit, like "Baldur's Gate was a shitty game" or some such idiocy.

And yes, that means you can consider me an inmature idiot. Blame my parents, teachers and schoolmates, thank you very much.

Oh no! A overhiped killer app for the PS3 gets a 7 out of 10!
WE WORLD WILL END!!!!

Sony is just jealous they couldn't beat the N64 review score of Ocarina of Time again.
Also as a pc gamer i have to say Killzone 2 does not look very inspiring. If they just didn't try so hard to be so serious. (come on, admit it, a game with enemys, dressed like nazis and NO german accent? Wolfenstein would be ashamed of you!)

I remember the last sentence in the review for OoT: "The only bad thing about Ocarina of Time is that it has an ending."

^^its just one review out of like 60, the majority is overwhelmingly positive

I think those of us who didn't like the review have great points as long as it doesn't come out "fanboyish" Quite a few who didn't like it will tell you it isnt the score that bothers, its the lack of detail in the review

From the reviews and comments to reviews and generally just what gets talked about I kinda wonder if most scores didn't get bumped up a notch just out of fear of the rabid fans.

Seriously, I dare you to give it a medium score Leigh. Like write a review where you SAY everything is awesome, but you give it a score of like, 6.7 or something just to make people's heads explode.

I'm not saying the game doesn't deserve whatever praise it gets, I wouldn't know. I'm just saying that the whole screechy 'ITS SO GREAT!' really makes me wonder and doubt more than I would otherwise. And I'm one of the last people to suspect people are being biased, I have a vague feeling that the whole 'being bought' accusation of review scoring is myth brought about by people not sharing each others opinions 100%

I think the best thing about this whole issues is that the Edge review starts with words: "Some would have you believe that Killzone has no fans,‭ ‬just fanboys"

From the way the reviews are sounding, im starting to wonder if they are holding this game up to a different set of standards than the other shooters that have come before it.

It seems as if some reviewers were expecting the second coming of jesus christ and are marking it down because it does what CoD4 did which is this: it didnt reinvent the wheel, it just made it much smoother.

So... does everyone hate EDGE now, or is this some big sarcastic joke that flew right over my head? XD

A 7 in Edge is actually pretty good. A 7 is a good game that has no innovation or creativity in its design. Judging by what I've read, that's exactly what Killzone 2 is: a great FPS, but not breaking any exciting new grounds. A game like Half-Life 2 got a 10 because it was a fantastic FPS, deserving successor of it's prequel and brought innovation to the table.

In short, I don't know why people complain about 7s. Though after reading the first sentence of the review in question, I am not surprised that this is happening.

I like Edge =(

I don't hate edge. I don't know them ether, I never bothered to care before now. do they print a magazine or are they online?

I approve of the method of using the full scale, so more things get 5s and less things get 9 and 10. Do they also break up a score into points? 7.5 for example? and did they really give Half Life 2 a 10? Strange, I never thought it was that great, it did have some good moments, and had a lot going for it, but the astetic, setting, story, and character design left something to be desired... granted that's all up to opinion, and I would have loved it had they just coated the halflife 2 story and design over with Killzone's. And kept the characters somewhat understated because that was a big problem with killzone, I wanted to strangle all the main characters by the time the game was half over.

As far as Killzone 2? I dunno, I look forward to playing it sometime, but I'm not going to vote it a 10 anywhere, or complain about other people's reviews.

Back to Half life 2. Ignoring that I found the setting somewhat dull, that shouldn't have had THAT much an impact on a perfect (or near perfect) game that everyone talks about. Am I missing something? I often appreciate movies more when I know the references that they pay homage to, the symbolism, the inside jokes, and especially to know when something new was tried (I love the unique and experimental). Maybe halflife2 needs a commentary track to point out what they did different from other games and where they tried new narrative techniques.

Which leads my thoughts back again to edge, is it an online source? Maybe I'll go read their reviews of Halflife2 and Killzone2 (yay, their scoring it a 7 DID generate traffic!) *goes their now*

Gods damn it Kyle G, EDGE are/were quite possibly the most respected games rag on the planet, and they've been around for over 15yrs in print form.

At least wiki them.
