And, We're Back!

Welcome to 2009, everyone! Hope all had a lovely holiday break. I did work a little bit over the past two weeks, but largely it was the most time I've ever spent away from the computer in months, a concept all of those who are as constantly plugged-in as I am would surely understand is incredibly relaxing.

My year-end feature at Kotaku chose three New Year's resolutions I'd like to see us make as gamers -- and three that I dearly hope the industry will resolve to make. It's idealistic of me, of course, but isn't that the point of New Year's resolutions? Last year I resolved to try and go one week without gaming, if you recall -- and failed.

If you missed Gamasutra's Best of 2008 lists, over the break we compiled all of our year-end bests into a handy feature, with our favorite games, developers, downloadable titles, top trends, controversies, surprises and more. Catch up if you missed it!

I also rounded up a summary of the year's major news events by quarter, covering January-March, April-June, July-September, and October-December. In our biz, sometimes keeping current from one day to the next can get so overwhelming that you forget what happened yesterday, let alone throughout the year, so hopefully these'll help if you'd like to review 2008's events.

Finally, have you been checking in with Ben Fritz's Cut Scene blog at Variety? Ben, Chris Dahlen, Tom Chick and I have been listing our personal ten favorites from the year, along with games we feel were a bit overhyped or disappointing (which, to read the comments, means we despise all that is good and holy and should be disqualified from ever reviewing again!).

My number one choice deviates me from the norm a bit, but is no surprise if you know me. My number two choice, however, is a very close second. I spent the break marathoning and completing that number two choice, and I haven't simply loved a game this much since I was a child. I immediately started a New Game Plus with hardly a pause.

Yes, I'm talking about Persona 4, which I can't wait to write more about. Meanwhile, I've got something of a holiday present for P4 fans: I made ringtones of some of my favorite themes from the game. If you can't get "Every Day's Great At Your Junes" out of your head, do what I did and have it ring your phone.

The first link is in iPhone ringtone format (m4r), and the second one is regular Quicktime audio (m4a). iPhone users shouldn't have trouble just dragging these into iTunes, but in the event you need a program to get it to work, I hugely recommend Efiko's iPhone Ringtone Maker. It gives you a free trial and it's cheap to register. I get miles of use out of it making hugely nerdy game ringtones, and I tend to be pretty disabled about anything gadget-related.

If you don't have an iPhone, you should still be able to make ringtones using the m4a format, and then send them to your mobile using a service like Myxer or something similar.

Ringtones:
"Your Junes" (m4a)
"Battle Victory" (m4a)
"Your Affection" (m4a)
"Main Theme" (m4a)

Bonus Present: Properly-sized Persona 4 iPhone wallpapers 1 and 2.

Hope you enjoy! Okay, year reviewed, resolutions made, gifts exchanged -- so with that, let's kick 2008 out the door and look ahead to the new year! How was your holiday? Made any gaming-related resolutions? Got predictions for 2009? Let's hear 'em.

Oh dear, having a Junes ringtone may be the only thing that will get me to take my phone off perma-vibrate.

I suppose I should thank you for it, too! Thanks a ton Leigh, you rule :D

Wow, interesting to see LittleBigPlant on everybody's list of overrated games of 2008. Now I don't feel so bad about not really enjoying it.

i stick to my codec-sounds as ringtone but i cant wait for persona 4 to be released in europe

SVGL said...

Krischn -- I mainly use the Codec sounds too! This is my first time changing it in ages.

Oh my goodness - having that ringtone would make anyone more joyful, even if they didn't know what Persona 4 was. I could be lying face-down in a gutter and hearing that would make me get up and dance.

I thought your Kotaku New Year's resolution feature was the bee's knees. This "engagement is a chocie" theme you have is something I hope to see you continue to pursue.

My holiday likewise consisted of Persona 4 (took my PS2 back home with me for Christmas week), with the gaps filled in by catching up on Brainy Gamer podcasts (thanks for turning me on to those). The game's lovely, and I expect to finish it by week's end, as I find myself unwilling to do much else with my time at this point.

I've been using the MGS guard alert noise for a while for text messages. It still continues to alarm me, especially at work.

Also, my gaming resolutions are primarily to figure out how to improve both how I write and how I talk about video games (inspired in no small part by this blog and the works of some of your oft-referenced colleagues) and to develop a small title of my own by year's end. In terms of game-playing, I want to see about experimenting with developers and genres outside my norm. I also intend to pay more attention to the names and individual talents of the people involved in making the games I play.

Thanks for the ringtones! My wife, brother and I are obsessed with Persona 4. Luckily we live together and no one gets upset when we repeatedly sing, "Everyday's great at your Junes!"

SVGL said...

Gareth -- given that I'm one of those people who constantly tries desperately for alert-free playthroughs (never wholly succeeding, mind you), i think that would probably give me chest pains.

This reminds me that I should update my ringtones. I've had my new phone for months and haven't downloaded any geeky audio (midis mainly) to use as ringtones. *shame*

Perhaps I'll try one of these out when I get home. Thanks Leigh!

Happy new year!

I was interested to see a game not on your top 10, which was Crisis Core, which you were fangirling over back in spring. Do you think it suffered for being early in the year, was it genuinely eclipsed by later titles? Do you now, looking back, put your love for it more down to nostalgia than anything else? (i.e. is it embarrassing now, to remember the fangirling, just as you were writing about the modern backlash to FFVII being a result of similar feelings?)
I ask because I only just played it, and am still firmly in the shiny-eyed fangirling stage! I was just rereading your euphoric week-of-FFVII posts, and it made me wonder if I'll feel much cooler about the game 6 months on. Thoughts?

SVGL said...

Kate -- A couple days after I finished my lists, I had a moment of, "oh crap. I forgot something."

Yeah. I simply totally spaced on Crisis Core. I guess if you forget completely about a game, it didn't impact you the way you thought it did? Well, I can say that if it had occurred to me it would have definitely made that list.

Picking's hard. I'm bummed I missed it.

Nice blog. I love video games… I have created a website for people who want to become a game tester. You can check it out at www.becomegametester.org I just thought that maybe you might be interested.

So you blasted through Persona 4, but did you manage to finish Persona 3 Leigh?

I haven't had a chance to sit down with Persona 4 yet personally and its killing me! -_-;

As for New Year's Gaming resolutions? I plan to clear out my backlog of games before the end of the year. I have 26 left!

Welcome back Leigh, and hooray for presents (if I was the mobile phone sort of guy, I'd certainly have the Junes theme on mine).

As to new years resolutions... to finish games before I buy new ones. Right now, I really want to try the new Prince of Persia, but until I've finished P4, I am resisting! (Helps that I'm utterly captivated by every moment of that game so far, and am sad to believe I may be near the end). That, and to maybe go back and finish a few other RPGs I never got around to finishing, such as FFIX, Lost Odyssey... er... that colourful one about Chopin...

Yeah, maybe not...

As for the next year? If I followed gaming news quite as much as I used to, I'd be able to give that a better answer. As to what I hope happens? More innovation in games over repitiion. Also, another Persona game, please, Atlus. No, really, please?

Forgot to add, I want to find some way around the "can't change the wallpaper" here at work so I could slap that picture up...

Welcome back from your vacations Leigh !
Your Kotaku feature was really interesting but I realized that all three resolutions were things that I already was doing. So I guess I will just focus on my other resolution, try to write more. Talking about that, have you missed that Prince of Persia "controversy" about difficulty. Maybe it just felt through the cracks of the holidays madness. :)

Welcome back Leigh.

Resolutions: finish the games I've got before I buy any more (not gonna happen). Get some good DS games (more likely).

My rediction for 2009 is slightly downbeat. We've seen publishers and developers take some creative risks and they've not paid off both critically and financially. I'm worried that this will mean the games of 2009 will be a little more conservative and inward looking.

But I'm looking forward to a beta of Star Wars: The Old Republic. Soon. Please.

If you have a mac with garageband, you can edit audio files and click on share>send ringtone to itunes.

If you don't have a mac you can goto http://www.myxer.com/ to edit audio files and send them to your phone for free but you'll have to register for an account. It'll convert to m4a also for iphones.

:D

I just got Rise in my party in P4! I like her voice better when she's gloomy. :F
