Summer in the City

You're looking at my neighborhood street fair in Spanish Harlem. What does it have to do with video game consoles? I wrote up a little tale at Kotaku today.

I'm still pretty wiped as we start riding up on E3 time - I've had tons of thoughts lately (on why I've decided GTA IV's story fails in nearly every way, on why Snake is so sexy, on Ivy's new boobs, on why I am a little bummed about RE5) but not nearly enough steam to crank them out. It's hot as hell in the city right now, and my colleagues and I have been working pretty hard!

Remember when I was editing Worlds in Motion and I used to complain that just about everybody was jumping on the virtual world bandwagon to market products, thereby sullying the potential of the landscape?

Even dried meatsticks have virtual worlds now. And no, I don't mean Second Life.

... means cleavage, cleavage, cleavage.

Sorry. That's the only thing I could think of since reading the subject line... and I really don't have much else to add.

Anyway, looking forward to any one of your thoughts (emphasis: GTA4) elaborated upon in the future XD

Hot town summer in the city back of my neck gettin' all dirt and gritty....something like that.. ahh the lovin' spoonfull and Die hard 3 :)
(Hopefully thats not all too abstract for people :S)

Ha hang in there Leigh, look forward to reading the stuff when you get it up :)

I am also wondering whether I got too sucked in by the hype of GTA4's story... Poor Niko

the slim jim world is pretty goofy, but you missed out on carl's jr./hardees joining the virtual world bandwagon.

their goal? to "revolutionize the way burger fans interact with others online."

With relation to GTA IV, allow me to wank out my gut reactions. I felt that it introduced the player to too many new characters too quickly, necessarily dumping old characters once their story arcs had finished, leaving the player with loads of characters to interact with, and none that they were able to become truly emotionally involved with. I was heartbroken when the few missions with Dwayne came to an end, and I was forced to satisfy myself with the same stolen conversations with him as I took him out bowling or drinking. The McCreary brothers I found boring (and Packie- why the hell was this mother and sister abusing dickhead a friend of Niko's in thr first place? How did Rockstar expect anyone to like that idiot?).

Also, the story doesn't seem to go anywhere. It's just a collection of lossely related escapades that serve an an excuse to cart the player off to different parts of the map. And why we never end up at the Statue of Happiness or the Rotterdam tower during a mission is anyone's guess. Seems like there were a lot of wasted opportunities in this game.

So yeah, utterly mystified myself as to why this game got tens all round. After five hours with the game, yes, I would have given it a ten because it was blowing my mind with all of its astonishing and intricate detail. However, 35 hours in and I was pretty jaded and annoyed at the hackneyed mission design and cardboard cut-out characters that I couldn't care less about.

So, yep, looking forward to Leigh's feelings on the matter!

Crazy times ahead, plus the weather's become unpredictable. Here its either sun, humid / cloudy, if not raining at night.

Hmm few highlights? GTAIV, I really gave this game a shot. But it felt like a "hit & miss" to me. I didn't feel driven to keep playing through the story. (aside from getting frustrated be being left out, and having to kill time to get another story mission) I honestly think multiplayer was just forced as an excuse to extend the game. (sigh) At least I rented it, instead of buying.

Speaking of games, over on GT they put the anime trailer for SFIV. It looks insanely impressive (animation looks like it was done from one of Production IG team) I am more excited about Street Fighter than anything else. Make that more than every other game, until SFIV has a street date. I'm not even sure if I might even buy anything but SFIV.

Note - Soul Calibur IV, I might rent.. but I'm still kinda unsure. It looks nice, I will give it that. But the series is definitely showing its age. Sure new engine, but more polish.

*I'm still scratching my head over the fact A) anyone can survive being stabbed, sliced, diced & puree'd B) how Ivy gets away with barely much defense, C)now every female character has an outfit that hardly can be called clothing

Resident Evil 5.. although taking us to a new location, its still the same game. I have to be honest, I'm not the RE fan I used to be.

This is why I like SVGL: because a writer who can do intelligent insightful posts -and- fangirlish ones without being self-conscious about it has my respect :)

If the thing that has you 'bummed' about RE5 is the racism drama bomb then I can sympathise. I think a lot of people are sick of it at this point.

Yeah, I read your article last week. Still seems strange to me that the Wii is doing so well but then, that's because Championship Manager and GTA doing well was no surprise to me at all. We're looking at the world from different angles: Me, who finds it appaling that Harry Potter got so popular when His Dark Materials is infinitely superior, and the general populace, who are quite happy with the simple, garden variety fantasy HP provides.

The Wii has great mass appeal. I can see why, I just think that people should be asking for better.

We knew these virtual worlds would come. The signs were there with the Burger "King" games and now, the prophecy is fulfilled. Gods that's depressing. =/

P.s. If you give us half your heat, we'll give you have our moisture. It's wet over here through most of the "summer".
