Nintendo's WiiWare launch yesterday is a bit easy to overlook, isn't it? I see it as a potentially significant thing, though. One of the things I find really exciting is that companies like Square Enix can think outside their usual parameters and develop ways to do more with smaller file sizes. If others can follow suit, my hope is that WiiWare becomes a new breeding ground for experimentation and innovation, like its siblings on XBLA and PSN have been (to some extent).Speaking of innovation, please don't miss Lost Winds. Seriously.
It reminds me more of Knytt and Braid than anything I've ever played on a home console, the way that both of those feel like a natural evolution (and a subtle revolution) on the platformer, while incorporating art and music in a really polished, elegant way. In particular, you'll see that Lost Winds has the same seamless progression from high, open skies above ground to mysterious, deep underground spaces as Knytt does. And the way the narrative leads the player gradually and fluidly into the gameplay is exactly the kind of thing I've heard Jon Blow give lectures about.
So yeah. Don't back-shelf WiiWare just because you're not excited about FFCC: My Life As A King - which, by the way, I have not tried yet, but colleagues I trust tell me it's good, too. The way Lost Winds has shown up as a console downloadable with all of the simple elegance for which we usually turn to our indies feels like a really important event to me.
To put it plain, it's good. Buy it!

Damn I'll habe to wait till 22/06 or 06/22.. to get it... and hoping for more from Braben in future
That might be the endorsement that pushes me over the edge. Kotaku had that nice preview and Nintendo Wii Fanboy had that glowing review too, so I might just get it. I spent my first points on Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King (what an annoyingly long title) and Defend Your Castle. My Life as a King is slow at the beginning, but it's picking up. And defend your castle is... well everyone knows what it is. I just needed the multiplayer.
I was on the edge, but with your endorsement you've pushed me into buying it. =p
I'm only 22 minutes into Lost Winds but so far the best part has been shaking the wiimote and watching the trees rustle ... I could do that all day. Hope the adventure kicks in soon, though.
I'm maybe 45 minutes into Lost Winds now and absolutely enchanted. It's totally charming. The combat is light and fun, the puzzles are fairly simple so far but it's very satisfying to play with the physics of blowing around fire, water and rocks.
I wish I didn't have to delete THREE more VC games to fit it on my system, but that's something Nintendo will address someday, I'm sure.
...(No I'm not. I'm not sure at all.)
I'll wait till they come out on disk, I always feel odd about having something without all its stuff... disk, box w/ art, instruction manual that I never read but love just the same.
I'm odd that way.
I have yet to purchase any downloadable anything for my Wii... But if it's this good, I just might.
Eric, you can copy to an SD card. Although it's very slow to copy apparently, and you can't run games off the card.
I'm waiting for your review of FFCC: My Life As A King.
*taps foot impatiently*
No, but seriously... that's one title I really want to hear from people about. Please play it for a week and let us know.
FFCC:My Life As A King pulled me away from Persona 3: FES and continues to hold me in its iron grip. Something about the pacing of the game makes it addictive. The days in the game are tiny morsels of sweet game play that leave me thinking, "Oh just one more and then I'll stop."
But I can't stop. T_T
